Already Toast: Caregiving and Burnout in America by Kate Washington

Already Toast is primarily a memoir about the author’s experience being thrown into the caregiver role when her husband Brad is unexpectedly diagnosed with cancer. Kate and Brad are living their best lives as busy, young early career professionals and as parents to small kids. She shares her brutally honest and emotional experiences she was forced to navigate but sprinkles in some journalism about caregiving the flaws within the healthcare system.

Ultimately, I have mixed feelings about this book. Navigating the healthcare system whenever you have a serious illness is an absolute nightmare that I have experienced first hand. Her experiences are heartbreaking and I could relate to some of what she was sharing. But there are times where she totally lost me and it felt off putting.

I actually appreciated when she sprinkled in some journalism about the brokenness of the system. But some people might feel like the author was trying to justify her feelings or responses. There were times when I almost didn’t finish because it felt purposefully disparaging or disrespectful. Perhaps, even a bit petulant? Overall, I feel like the author does a great job of highlighting the challenges a caregiver faces in America – but there are parts that may rub you the wrong way or might be difficult to relate to.
